If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to breathe underwater, now’s your chance to find out. Whether you’re ticking off a bucket-list dream or just fancy a bit of adventure, scuba diving in Thailand is an experience you’ll never forget, and Koh Tao is hands-down one of the best places in the world to give it a go.
Tucked away in the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Tao is a small island with a big reputation in the diving world. It’s where thousands of people take their first breaths underwater every year. And once you see the crystal-clear water, the calm bays, and the colourful marine life, you’ll quickly understand why.
So, what exactly is a “Try Dive”?
A Try Dive (also known as Discover Scuba Diving) is a one-day introduction to scuba diving. No previous experience is needed and you don’t need to be a strong swimmer, you just need to be curious and ready to give it a go.
The experience usually begins with a short theory session on land, where your instructor will walk you through how the equipment works and the key safety essentials. Then it’s time to gear up and head into our on-site training pool to practise a few basic skills, like clearing your mask and breathing steadily through your regulator.
Once you're feeling confident and ready, the real adventure kicks off. You’ll hop on the boat and cruise out to explore the crystal-clear waters around Koh Tao with two guided dives, going as deep as 12 metres. It’s a brilliant way to get a proper feel for scuba diving, all with a professional instructor by your side every step of the way.
It’s not a full certification, but it gives you a proper taste of what scuba diving is all about.
Why Koh Tao is ideal for beginners
There are plenty of places to try diving in Thailand, but Koh Tao really does shine for first-timers. The island is known for its gentle conditions, with warm, clear waters and loads of sheltered dive sites that are perfect for building your confidence underwater. Most of the beginner dives take place in quiet bays, making it a super safe and enjoyable experience.
You’ll also find friendly instructors, relaxed vibes, and a dive community that’s passionate about helping people fall in love with the ocean. Plus, it’s brilliant value for money, Koh Tao is one of the most affordable places in the world to dive.
And when you’re not underwater? The island offers everything from beach bars and fire shows to yoga studios and sunset hikes. It’s the perfect mix of chilled-out island life and outdoor adventure.
What can you expect to see?
You don’t have to go deep to see incredible marine life on Koh Tao. Even on your very first dive, you might spot:
-
Schools of brightly coloured tropical fish swirling around you
-
blue-spotted stingrays resting on the sand
-
Moray eels peeking out from the rocks
-
Parrotfish munching away on coral
-
And maybe even the occasional turtle gliding past
Dive sites like Mango Bay, Japanese Gardens, Twins, and Aow Leuk are favourites for Try Dives, they’re shallow, easy to access, and absolutely full of life.
Nervous? You’re not alone.
A lot of people feel a bit anxious before their first dive, and that’s completely normal! Those first few minutes breathing through a regulator can feel a little strange, but don’t worry, your instructor will be with you every step of the way, guiding you at your pace. You’ll practise everything in shallow water first, so there’s no rush. And if you need to take a breather, just pause, relax, and continue when you’re ready.
What makes diving so rewarding is the confidence it builds. You’ll learn to trust yourself and stay calm in a brand-new environment. By the end of the day, you’ll be loving it, and by the time you’re done, you’ll be 100% hooked on the underwater world!
Who can do a Try Dive?
Anyone over the age of 10 and in good health can give scuba diving a try. You don’t need to be an Olympic swimmer, just as long as you’re comfortable in the water.
If you have any medical conditions, it’s a good idea to check with your doctor before booking, just to make sure everything’s good to go!
A few tips for your first dive
-
Stay hydrated the day before, and avoid alcohol (sorry, but it’s worth it!)
-
Get a good night’s sleep, you’ll enjoy it more if you’re well-rested
-
Don’t fly straight after diving, you’ll need to wait at least 18 hours
-
Most importantly, relax and enjoy it. This is meant to be fun!
