The Wild Sex Lives of Persian Carpet Flatworms

If you caught our blog, "How Do Fish Have Sex?", you already know the ocean is home to some truly bizarre love stories. By adding a humorous twist to sex, we can dive deeper into a fundamental truth: reproduction fuels life’s abundance, from feeding ecosystems to nurturing reefs that protect our coastlines. Conservation starts with understanding these quirky love lives!

But just when you thought it couldn’t get any weirder, enter the Persian Carpet Flatworms - and trust me, their version of romance takes things to a whole new level!

Small but Mighty: The Persian Carpet Flatworm

Persian Carpet Flatworms (Pseudobiceros bedfordi) are commonly spotted at Koh Tao dive sites. Like nudibranchs, they’re hermaphrodites, equipped with both male and female reproductive organs, allowing them to take on either parental role. Oh, and they’re also blind, relying on smell to navigate their world. But that’s where the similarities to nudibranchs end!

These cute little guys might look like harmless floaters, but they’re actually voracious predators with a seriously aggressive streak. On the hunt for small invertebrates, they use their extendable pharynx (basically a feeding tube) to grab and swallow their meals. They’re on a mission to dominate their environment, often using brutal tactics to overpower smaller creatures. Appearances can be deceiving, I know… And when it comes to mating, well, trust me, you're not ready for this one!

Flatworm Fights and Love Bites

It all starts when one flatworm senses the presence of another, a potential partner. Remember, they're blind! These little fighters rely on their sense of smell to detect each other. They're wary of one another for good reason - each flatworm wants to avoid the laborious task of carrying fertilized eggs. It's better not to be pregnant, right?

For many species, females are more selective when choosing mates because their investment in reproduction is greater. If they’re going to put in all that effort, the male’s genes better be worth it. This selectivity increases the chances of healthier offspring that have a better chance of survival. So, what happens when these flatworms meet? Well, for simpler creatures, it’s clear: being male often takes much less effort while still allowing the lineage to continue. Nature finds a balance between effort and survival... But with flatworms, there’s no time for calm discussions. Instead, they solve it the only way they know: a battle.

So, The flatworms rear up, revealing their two-pronged penises, and prepare for battle. It's like a fencing match, but with much higher stakes - each flatworm tries to stab and inseminate the other without getting stabbed first. And when I say strike anywhere, I mean anywhere on the body, and that’s enough to fertilize.

Penis fencing flatworms

Penis fencing can last up to an hour, and the MMA fight wraps up when one flatworm successfully injects its sperm into the rival. The defeated flatworm is left with a scar and the tough task of laying the eggs, while quickly hunting for food to replenish all the energy needed to make them. Meanwhile, the winner gets to pass on its 'master swordsman' genes to the next generation. So, in the end, being the loser isn’t all bad - it’s still a win for future generations, even if the defeated flatworm is doing all the hard work!
