Chumphon Pinnacle is the jewel of Koh Tao's dive sites, located 10km northwest of the island, about a 45-minute boat journey from Coral Grand Divers. It ranges from 14 to 40 meters deep, making it a must-see when exploring Koh Tao's underwater wonders!
The main pinnacle rises from 35m to just 14m below the surface, surrounded by these smaller formations that are just covered in vibrant coral, sea whips, gorgonian sea fans, and barrel sponges.Anemone beds on the southeast side are bustling with pink anemone fish, while moray eels and grouper hide in crevices and under ledges.
This site showcases a collection of large pinnacles arranged in an oval shape, boasting exceptional visibility for most of the year. On optimal days, visibility can reach up to 35 meters, offering divers a clear view of the underwater landscape. Occasionally, a thermocline starts around 18 meters, creating a distinct layer in the water column akin to entering a cloud. Despite varying visibility conditions, every dive at Chumphon Pinnacle promises an awesome experience.
Chumphon Pinnacle a hotspot for pelagic creatures and a diverse array of reef fish. Giant Trevally, Barracuda, King Mackerel, Fusilier, Batfish and Queenfish are frequent visitors year-round. You will also encounter massive Marbled Groupers and if you've got a keen eye for the small stuff, peek into the snug crevices where you'll find Banded Boxing Shrimps, Janns Pipefish, Durban Dancing Shrimps and Nudibranchs.The highlight? Whalesharks, with over 100 sightings annually, sometimes lingering for days with their gang of Remoras and smaller fish!
Bullsharks were once a staple at Chumphon Pinnacle, with up to 10 Sharks reliably showing up daily. However, they mysteriously vanished in 2010. Here's hoping they stage a comeback soon!
